POSITION PROFILE:

The Community Organizer is responsible for the development and ongoing support to the City Heights Clean and Safe Coalition’s efforts in the City Heights community of the City of San Diego. Bilingual in English and Spanish required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organize and sustain a community-based coalition that promotes collaboration and partnerships with stakeholders in City Heights by developing strategies to address quality of life issues impacting the cleanliness, substance abuse and safety in the community; Manage coalition’s website and social media page
  • Develop and implement community safety and ATOD prevention activities
  • Establish and promote community participation in leadership, ownership and decision-making regarding community priorities and project activities
  • Prepare and conduct training sessions and workshops for community leaders and residents on how to identify, document, and report issues and conditions impacting their quality of life
  • Provide data for outcome monitoring systems, and statistical records to keep track of all reported issues and their resolution and monitor community-level indicators
  • Manage coalition’s social media pages
  • Prepare and deliver written and oral reports as requested
  • Other tasks as assigned by the ATOD Program Manager

 QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience and Certifications):

  • In the process of completing Bachelor’s Degree and/or commensurate experience in community and economic development working with collaborative efforts and/or similar initiatives
  • Must be a City Heights resident
  • Experience in community organizing, leading meetings, and event planning
  • Experience with social media
  • Experience with and respect for diverse cultures, demonstrated effectiveness in working within a collaborative environment, and experience in public speaking and presentation
  • Experience with crime prevention strategies, alcohol, tobacco and drug issues, and community development
  • Experience in working with City Government/City Departments
  • Have access to reliable transportation and willing to use it for job related tasks

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Broad knowledge of diverse cultures and sensitivity in dealing with diversity issues
  • Ability to collaborate and work in a team-oriented atmosphere
  • Ability to work independently and take significant initiative
