Description

The San Diego Natural History Museum is looking for a passionate mission supporting and natural history loving individual to lead the content development for exhibitions. Reporting to the Director of Experience Design, the Exhibit Developer plays a central role in creating new exhibitions by integrating concepts and stories with the physical space to create an experiential environment for learning.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supports the Director of Experience Design in strategic and vision activities in collaboration with Exhibit Project Coordinator.
  • Works with scientific experts and members of the creative team to generate concepts and ideas, articulate exhibit messages, shape storylines, and select objects for display.
  • Acts as an effective written and verbal science communicator by researching scientific subject matter or curatorial work and disseminating content into publicly accessible copy.
  • Drives the exhibit development process utilizing a process of content drives design.
  • Communicates exhibition plans to Museum staff, Museum administration, collections, public programs and conservation staff, and volunteers.
  • Conducts in-person and virtual tours and presentations with staff, volunteers, donors and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with exhibit designers to realize environments from concept to production.
  • Conducts all primary and secondary research.
  • Writes label text, A/V media scripts, project briefs, and project proposal narratives.
  • Works with Vice President of Education and Engagement as needed for storyline development, effectiveness of visitor engagement, storytelling, and accessibility.
  • Guides and reviews the production of illustrations, models, interactives, and A/V media.
  • Selects objects and specimens for exhibitions in collaboration with curators.
  • Coordinates use of essential media (photo, video) by conducting research, engaging prospective partners and securing needed licensing agreements with stakeholders.
  • Vets all final written and visual content (images, illustrations, etc.) with curators for accuracy.
  • Develops scope of work and fee schedule for exhibit development contracts (media developers, translation, and evaluation).
  • Works with the Director of Experience Design, Exhibits staff and Vice President of Education and Engagement to plan for future exhibitions in alignment with the Museum’s Strategy Roadmap.
  • Contributes to ongoing care and remediation of exhibitions by working with Director of Experience Design and Exhibits Project Coordinator to identify text and graphics that require updates. Acts as lead for re-writing, editing copy or identifying graphic replacements for existing exhibits.
  • Builds audience awareness by incorporating current informal learning theory and front-end, formative, and summative evaluation into exhibit development process.
  • Works collaboratively Education staff to determine opportunities for interactives and educational goals for Exhibits.
  • Works collaboratively with Marketing staff to provide copy and content for Marketing collateral, webpage, blogs and promotional materials.
  • Works with Institutional Advancement staff to contribute to grants and reports that support Exhibits Department activities.
  • Works with Exhibits Department on other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
  • College degree and two or more years of museum exhibit work experience; or four years of equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in scientific writing and/or communication.
  • Demonstrates creative initiative in exhibition development.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to conceptualize and analyze both existing and potential problems and solutions.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) desired
  • In compliance with the San Diego Natural History Museum’s mandatory vaccination policy, the Museum requires proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 as a condition of employment. Accommodations based on medical and religious exemptions will be considered.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Some weekends and evenings are required.
