Teaching Artists in community programs at San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory (SDYS)
co-create a joyful and fulfilling environment for musical learning with students, families, and partners in

Primary Areas of Responsibility

Relationships & Community Building
Create a consistent and safe environment with procedures and clear expectations
Develop strong relationships with students, parents, coworkers, and school site partners
Center inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in teaching practice
On-Site Classroom Teaching
Encourage learning and performance activities that build self-confidence and leadership
Teach appropriate pedagogy aligned with California Arts Standards and/or SDYS audition
Select and incorporate appropriate and inclusive instructional materials, method books, and other
pedagogical resources for the programs
Contribute to the development of program curriculum and instructional philosophy as appropriate
Actively supervise students; take and record student attendance, as appropriate

Musical Artistry & Residency
Provide artistic support and guidance in the classroom at partner schools
Inspire students by modeling musical curiosity through authentic and celebratory exploration of
musical craft, both solo and in collaboration with others

Teamwork & Cross-Department Support
Contribute to a vibrant, welcoming, and supportive team culture
Explore creative approaches to solution-making with a community-centered lens
Offer honest and constructive feedback to colleagues, partners, and supervisor when appropriate
Participate in ongoing professional growth and development activities
As appropriate, teach private/group lessons to students in SDYS’ youth ensemble programs in
Balboa Park, online, or other locations.
Actively participate in appropriate administrative duties related to the role, including but not limited
to meeting participation, payroll reporting, and staff development activities.

Google Chat/Spaces, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Drive) and video chat
software (e.g. Zoom)
Complete and maintain required work clearance, training, and/or certifications, including but not limited
to TB testing, LiveScan fingerprinting, and CPR/First Aid training.

Preferred Qualifications
Classroom management experience
Private and group lesson teaching experience, preferably with elementary school students
Bilingual (Spanish or Vietnamese)
Lived experience within community served
Alumni of Opus Project, SDYS, or an El Sistema-inspired program is a plus
