Our Mission is to educate and inspire our communities to prevent burn injuries and empower those affected by burn trauma.
The Burn Institute is a local nonprofit health agency whose mission is to educate and inspire our communities to reduce burn injuries and empower those affected by burn trauma. For over four decades, the Burn Institute has reached thousands of children and adults each year by providing lifesaving fire and burn prevention education; funding vital burn research and treatment; and conducting burn survivor support programs that help children and adults cope with the devastating psychological and physical effects of their injuries. One of the Institute’s first accomplishments was to help establish the UC San Diego Regional Burn Center where they treat approximately 450 patients a year.
Burn injuries, whether accidental or inflicted, remain one of the leading causes of childhood death and disfigurement in our nation. Even though it is estimated that 80 percent of burn injuries and deaths are preventable, burn injuries continue to remain one of the leading causes of childhood injury in the U.S. – 250,000 are injured, and 1,000 children die each year as a result of burn trauma.
