Company Overview

Serving Seniors is a nonprofit organization in San Diego, California, that helps seniors in poverty live healthy and fulfilling lives. Established in 1970, Serving Seniors helps low-income and unhoused seniors thrive using an innovative model of whole-person, wraparound support including meals, housing, health and social services, and enrichment activities. We work at numerous sites across the county and in the homes of hundreds of homebound seniors. Our flagship Gary & Mary West Senior Wellness Center is unlike any other senior center in the nation. Open 365 days a year, the Wellness Center provides daily meals, along with two floors of integrated resources including health clinicians, case managers, housing assistance, activities, lifelong learning, a Cyber Café, and connection to over 25 direct service partners, including an on-site senior dental center. Last year, we served 1,145,899 meals and coordinated services to 6,500 older adults aged 60 and above, most of them living on less than $1,200 per month. Serving Seniors is the largest provider of meals to seniors in San Diego County, and one of the only organizations across the country providing such a broad base of services to low-income and unhoused older adults.

Company History

Established in 1970, Serving Seniors operated under the umbrella of Catholic Charities as a nutrition site providing lunches to disadvantaged seniors. As Cedar Community Center, the organization earned its 501(c)(3) designation in 1973 and changed its name to Senior Community Centers in 1983. The organization opened its first affordable housing residence, Potiker Family Senior Residence, in 2003 and its second, Potiker City Heights Residence, in 2007. In 2010, the organization opened its flagship Gary & Mary West Senior Wellness Center before rebranding as Serving Seniors in 2014. In 2019, Serving Seniors opened its third supportive housing residence, Schmale Family Senior Residence, in Ramona. Our fourth supportive housing residence, the Harris Family Senior Residence, opened in October 2022 in City Heights.

Benefits

Serving Seniors employee benefits program is available to all full-time employees who are working consistently 30 hours or more per week. Eligibility is the first of the month, 30 days following the date of hire.

Medical: Serving Seniors pays 100% of the employee-only premium for the Simnsa, Kaiser, and Health Net Gold Salud Y mas, Health Net Gold Smartcare, and Health Net Platinum Smartcare plans. Employees may elect to buy up and pay the difference for the Health Net Platinum Salud Y Mas or the Health Net PPO plans. Employees may also add and pay for their dependent’s coverage through pre-tax payroll deductions.

Dental: Serving Seniors pays 100% of the employee-only premium for the Simnsa and Metlife dental HMO plans. Employees may buy up and pay the difference for the Metlife dental PPO plan.

Vision: This plan is offered on a voluntary basis and employees will pay for the entire premium through pre-tax payroll deductions.

Group Life and Long Term Disability: Serving Seniors pays 100% of the employees premium for these plans.

Supplemental Life: This plan is offered on a voluntary basis and employees will pay for the entire premium through pre-tax payroll deductions.

Flexible Spending Account is a special account you put money into that you use to pay for certain out-of-pocket health care costs for you, your spouse, and your eligible dependents. Money is set aside from your paycheck before taxes are taken out. You can then use your pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible healthcare expenses throughout the current plan year.

Employer Contributions
Employees will become fully vested upon the completion of three years of employment.

Vesting Schedule
• Completion of 1 year of service: 33% vested
• Completion of 2 years of service: 66% vested
• Completion of 3 years of service: 100% vested

Serving Seniors Matching Contribution: Dollar for Dollar up to 3% match. All Serving Seniors 403(b) contributions are on a pre-tax basis

Paid Time Off (PTO)
All full-time and part-time employees are eligible for paid time off (PTO). The amount of PTO received is based upon the employee’s length of continuous service with Serving Seniors (part-time employees will accrue PTO on a pro-rated basis)
